The bride may be the undisputed star of the wedding, but we grooms get tossed a bone now and then. Here’s one we do get that I particularly like, especially considering the unlimited possibilities it provides, and because it’s a great way to weave your personality and interests into the affair. Always a good thing. But really, this is every bit a goodie for her as it is for him: whether you’re a groom looking to put your own stamp on your big day or a bride searching for creative ideas to help personalize the wedding in general, don’t pass up the opportunity to make an impression with a fun and unique groom’s cake.
The groom’s cake is rooted in southern tradition, where the bride gives a smaller, usually richer cake to her sweetheart as a gift. It plays sidekick to the larger, lighter, more elegant wedding cake, and is either sliced up and then boxed as gifts for guests to take home, or provided as a tasty alternative dessert dish during the reception. Back in the day, legend had it that a gal who slept with a (presumably contained) slice of the groom’s cake under her pillow would dream of the guy she was going to marry.
Today, groom’s cakes can get personal, and I’m talking really personal. It’s a great way to showcase his love of a hobby or special interest. Be creative with it! This is one of those chances I wrote about earlier to think outside the box, step outside the comfort zone of the expected and accepted, and make your wedding your own by really showcasing your personalities. These kind of details often wind up being the most memorable. Just be careful…groom’s cakes, if really unleashed, can be total spotlight hogs.
The following is a collection I put together of some of the wilder ones I’ve come across. Check out these fun and inspirational–if a little crazy–examples of the “other” wedding cake:

What's even more amazing about this cake than its awesome design is that it actually functions as a keg! This one was made for a retirement party, but would be one heck of a groom's cake.

A crawfish broil cake! This Louisiana groomsman sure must love his cajun crustaceans. Click for the closeup to see how real those potatoes and "broth" look.

360 view of an X-Box 360, complete with wireless remote. The story here goes that some guests thought a real X Box had been rolled out as a joke!

If your desk gets too cluttered...EAT IT! This dude must really love his MacBook. At least it's not the Air...wouldn't be much substance to a slice of that.

I need to know where you are located. Very special wedding being held New Year’s Eve in Texas. We cannot find anyone in Texas that does the Xbox as well as you. Please reply and if you are not here can you give me an idea of how you might know of in Texas that is as talented as you are. I can find the cakes but nothing as realistic as this one.
Thanks you, Syl
